(34.) “You broke my heart.”

He scoffed. “Sure felt like it. And of course ye cared. Ye were caring enough ta try and see if ye couldn’t order fer me ta ‘ave another vision just so ye could ‘ave a paycheck. We all needed ta survive Cordelia, not just ye.” Doyle stepped back, a little shocked. “Y-ye cried….I made ye cry…ye cried cause I died…”

He backed up until he could feel the wall behind him, using it as support, his voice defeated, almost cordial. “Yer right. As always yer right. If I can’t be civil or be nice then I best be going.” Straightening up he gave a bow. “As ye wish princess. As ye wish.” Standing up he headed for the door. Pausing only when he had his hand on the doorknob.

“And you expected me to realize that? Doyle, I was nineteen then; I was still just a kid. A self-absorbed kid who’d lost everything within the past year. Did I ever tell you that I wanted to go to college?” she laughed bitterly and shook her head. “But that doesn’t matter now.”

Cordelia’s expression suddenly transformed into something that was nearly a sneer. “Wow, you’re really surprised I cried, aren’t you? How much of a coldhearted bitch did you think I was?”

It looked like Doyle hadn’t been that different from everyone else, after all. With that thought running through her mind, she didn’t make any move to stop him as he headed toward the door.
